I have intended to build a perfect chicken coop in my backyard. I don’t want to buy ready-made coops because they are costlier. I do want to build my own chicken coop at affordable cost, which is not more than $500. I do want to raise only 10 chickens..
If you going to build a coop then make sure it has a floor and is a foot off the ground to prevent rats burying up through in to the coop. Cover the floor with saw dust and change it every few weeks. Make the roosts big enough that ten chickens can perch on each one. Put in three perches at different levels. This allows the birds to select a level of seniority and they will be happier. Happy chickens lay better if that’s what you want them for.

You don’t need to buy their coops but you need to Yahoo chickens and chicken coops. You will get some good ideas and also how to care for chickens. The articles made me change my mind about raising chickens.

If possible, I would design a small coop that moves, so you can move it and the fence, around the yard- if the yard is large enough. Then the birds can hunt for bugs in a new area every few days, and won’t dig up all the grass in one spot. ( And they fertilize the lawn…)
For a permanent structure, I’d build a straw bale chicken coop, and cover the bales with a lime/clay plaster. This option will probably cost more than $500 for a 12×12′ coop., unless you can get bales for $2 each. (They’re $6+ here… )

My first experience with chicken coops failed because fox got into it and killed all my chickens. You should choose the right design of your coop to avoid this problem.
